Now that morning prayers at school have become so subversive a practice in so many places, youngsters are generally getting more poetry declaimed at them than the curriculum has customarily called for. This collection has the value of being pre-tested before classrooms of children by the compiler--their teacher. It has dual appeal as both a personal book and one that is easy for teachers to use. The poets included are many and various, but there is a reliance (a happy one) on the best of the poets recognized for their particular ability to speak meaningfully and beautifully to children-- de la Mare, Farjeon, Fisher, and Stevenson. Aptly titled, these are poems it is a pleasure to hear over and over again.
