KIRKUS REVIEW

Subtitled A Story of the Buddha, this is a simple but attractive version of the story of the Indian Prince Siddartha, from his birth and youth to the time when he became Buddha, an Enlightened One. The Author's Note provides a little of the historical/philosophic background for Buddhism, but otherwise the story is told as a folk tale and incorporates some of the legends which developed about Buddha. His birth is given miraculous attributes, and the details of his sumptuous early life balance out well with the descriptions of his later asceticism and his eventual spiritual inspiration of the ""Eightfold Path."" The text is uncluttered and dignified.
