ALL YEAR LONG

An ill-advised attempt to introduce—together—the days of the week and the months of the year (not only because seven into twelve doesn't go). In itself, the text is meaningless: "Sunday in January. Monday in February/and in March." The pictures are pleasant, posterish compositions (large, generalized forms and flat color) that illustrate the passing seasons in calendar fashion, generally but not invariably utilizing motifs special to the month. (February, however, is a groundhog seeing its shadow, not Valentine's Day.) Nothing about the pictures, however, distinguishes the days of the week one from another, nor could it reasonably. And to lead a child to think that there might be something special about Monday in February ("and in March") or, conversely, that Halloween—"Friday in October"—always falls on a Friday, is simply confusing. The silliness of the scheme is most apparent, however, when it presents us with Thanksgiving—albeit, unobtrusively, a school-play reenactment—on a Friday in November. A con-foundment, just about every which way.
