When a family of five, plus dog, go backpacking, they have a glorious afternoon engaging in a variety of activities that disturb the local wildlife: the dog chases a woodchuck, a child's dive sends a frog hopping, a kite disturbs a raccoon hidden in a tree; even the owl is pursued by a swirl of campfire smoke. But the tables are turned during the moonlit night; from katydid to coyote, the campsite resounds with the din of animal voices. Tafuri is well known for her clean, bold illustrations, with simplified forms in black line and brightly colored inks and dyes, capturing the essence of the scenes represented. Text here is limited to the comment "It was the first day of summer. . ." plus the dozen animal sounds at the conclusion, but there will be much to discuss as a small lap-sitter or preschool group spies the creatures and events in the handsome double spreads, and they're sure to chuckle at the concluding reversal.
