THE RETARDED CHILD

Of the 3 percent of the population born mentally handicapped, 75-80 percent are educable, can be rehabilitated and returned to the community. Mrs. Faber became interested in the retarded when she met a twelve-year-old who sadly contrasted with her own son. She takes the reader into homes to show how families are affected by a member's handicap, tours the world to show the special care now being offered in Japan, Israel, Denmark, England, etc. Then she takes a more protracted look at education centers, halfway houses, the Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential in the United States. A once over brightly for the interested lay person, not the initiate.
