THE SNOW RABBIT

This could be a reject from Sailing to Cythera (1974), slighter but with the same sort of muddled relationship between intent and outcome. And, as pictured, the rabbit which James makes out of snow (and provides with a hat and coat) looks more like a commercial toy or figurine than a small child's snow sculpture. Anyway, James brings the rabbit inside to get warm by the fire, and though it melts, somehow or other, after James paints a picture of its hat and coat and house and some carrots for its supper, he comes downstairs the next morning to find that the rabbit, too, is in the picture--""smiling."" Whatever point Willard has in mind, the one that comes through won't Stand up to reality testing--let alone a five-year-old's questions.
