HOLLERING SUN

Poetry, aphorisms and photographs -- all spaciously arranged on black and white pages -- illuminate the spirit of the Taos Indians whose Blue Lake preserve was recently returned to them by act of Congress. The themes are nature, legends of creation, village life, the love of the land (""This land was the land/ Of our great waters/ The beating heart of nature flowing through time""), and the photos -- of animals, children and mountain waterfalls -- echo the mood of reverent silence. One could perhaps wish that Nancy Wood's introduction, which strives mightily to capture the essence of the Taos' indifference to white man's history, had told us more about her role in gathering this material, but as for their meaning, the poems themselves offer a clear, eloquent invitation: ""Listen, my brother/ My words are those of dead generations/ And of generations still to be./ My words I give to you./ The meaning is for you to find.
