Substantial meat and potatoes rations in Naomi Jacob's usual manner, a story of the Yorkshire Riding and a family that drifted away from the land and its solid values The book spans four generations, from strong-willed old Topliss Langdon, farmer born and bred, who could not hold his dandified niecÉs and nephews on the land. The tradition is carried on through Bess, a farm girl, and niece by a marriage of necessity, but once again her children will not carry through until, with the fourth generation, they return to the Riding. Good craftsmanship, in characterization and background, but a little too stolid.
