Short but apposite science fiction novel that first appeared in 1975 in Britain, from the author of the well-known Memoirs of a Spacewoman (1962). In an effort to banish aggression, racism, poverty, and other social ills, a wise world government has decreed that homosexuality shall be the norm, with selected citizens reproducing themselves by cloning. There are, however, dissidents: those who prefer to procreate by the old fashioned method; and ``clone mums'' unwilling to yield up their cloned offspring for the requisite behavioral conditioning. Gradually, the gene pool grows impoverished, and the government must seek another way forward. An intriguing thought experiment in social/genetic engineering, set forth in a quirky but ingratiating prose style.
