I liked this better than any collection Nash Buckingham has done, though no single story surpasses the classic Shootines' Gent'man. Listed by the publishers as fiction, this reads more like a collection of personal experiences, dating back to childhood and the beginnings of the making of a great sportsman of the old school. Most of the stories are set in the South, -- in duck blinds, at field trials, on lakes and rivers and marchlands. There are stories of great hunters and great gentlemen of the field brotherhood, from Negro paddlers to noblemen. There is humor and sentiment and good spinning of tall tales -- and threading all together, the code of sport in its best sense, the love of outdoors. The Buy for your sport book collectors in a year when the choice of material of this kind is very limited. Illustrated with drawings by Arthur Fuller, and with 17 photographs.
