A realistic novel of modern Russia -- the story of a girl, gently born and reared, forced to become the mistress of successive men in order to keep her invalid mother from starvation. In spite of the plot, it is in no sense a ""racy"" story. Rather is it a tragic commentary on one aspect of modern civilization and an interesting picture of one phase of Russia today. Exceptionally well done, the writing indicates a maturity that few first novels show.
