Hand shadows introduce all sorts of animals from A to Z in this large-format board book.

The alphabet is used as a vehicle to present a series of animals in stark, eye-catching black shadows against a white background. Accompanying each silhouette is its corresponding letter in both upper- and lowercase, the name of the animal in question, and a drawing of the hands forming each animal. Readers will find these drawings very helpful if they wish to reproduce the silhouettes themselves. The animals are all relatively well-known ones (dog, octopus, swan), but it is the ways they are made that will strike a chord. Sometimes the animals take shape by the interlocking of two hands in a certain way; in others the addition of a small everyday object completes the image, such as straws for the whiskers of a cat, a watercolor brush for the ear of a llama, or a small paper circle for the head of an octopus. Imaginative and playful, this should have adults and older children working to reproduce the animals shown—and, it’s to be hoped, to try out some of their own. A removable instructional poster is included.

An imaginative book that children old enough to have the dexterity needed to create shadow images will thoroughly enjoy.
