Alice and Frank Tomahawk, respectively eight and ten, find their life on the South Dakota Sioux reservation one of conflict and confusion. Alice is determined to assimilate while her brother deplores the white man's ways and wishes to be a warrior. An eccentric grandmother, a disoriented father, a naughty raccoon, and a staff of bewildered teachers further complicate matters until good sense and good will triumph and the children learn that compromise will allow them to benefit from the best of both traditions. Natalie Carlson, author of the Orpheline books, treats what is basically a serious subject with grace and wit. Her story is not merely a vehicle for the lesson she teaches, it is consistently entertaining, brimming with lively incident and appealing characters.
