PRISCILLA AND THE PINK PLANET

In this rhyming story, a first effort by a brother-and-sister team, Priscilla is a spunky little girl who lives on a monochromatic planet awash in the color pink. When she sets off to find out if there are any other colors anywhere in her world (don’t ask how she would know about other colors), she meets a multicolored butterfly and the Great Queen of Pink, a Queen of Hearts sort of character who is in charge of the entire pink world. Priscilla tactfully convinces the queen that pink will stand out against all the other colors, and a rainbow of shades is restored to the planet. The rhyming text and cartoon-style illustrations exhibit echoes of Dr. Seuss, and one illustration offers a symbolic tip of the hat to that famous cat with swirling pink, a friendly fish in a bowl, and a tumbling cup and saucer. Though the sing-song rhythm of the text occasionally wobbles, Priscilla has her own individualistic charm and the Great Queen of Pink is a force to be reckoned with. (Picture book. 3-7)
