KIRKUS REVIEW

In addition to Thomas Paine and William Penn, there are the less often described heroes and heroines. These are the people who forced America to live up to its promised freedom or reminded the world that freedom has enemies. The book includes- Albert Einstein selecting his forum abroad after Hitler's Germany began to close in; Elizabeth Cady Stanton politicking for women's legal rights, which included more than the vote; Elijah Parish Lovejoy dying at the hands of a mob for his right to print his anti-slavery newspaper; Marian Anderson and her artistry conquering the blatantly segregated facilities at Constitution Hall in Washington, D. C. in 1939; and Edwin Markham who worked with prose and poetry against the conditions and institution of child labor.
