A splendid collection of stories dealing with animal psychology. Miss de la Roche has the perception and sensitivity to identify herself with the animal in question and to do so without sentimentality. There is a wildness and splendor about these animals (largely domestic cats and dogs) that demand respect rather than condescension. The adult mind, in its reaction to pets, is examined also. There is a strange eerie quality to many of the stories which, coupled with beautiful prose, makes them unforgettable.
