WHEN TWO OR MORE ARE GATHERED TOGETHER

As already seen in numerous periodicals, these are full-color photographs of groups in which Slavin attempts to explore the relationship between personal and group identities. Using assemblages as different as the New York City Fire Department and the Lipko Comedy Chimps, he allowed the members to arrange themselves within a given area, positing significance in their chosen placement and in the paraphernalia which accompanied them--costumes, trophies, the Staten Island ferry. Whether intentionally bizarre (the Society of Girners, facial contortionists) or unexpectedly striking (the countless electric blue jackets of the Electrolux salespeople), they are revealing, and many warrant more than a second look. A curiosity but seductive--like an old class picture.
