KIRKUS REVIEW

In the ""Hands On Science"" series, a survey of movement. While the format here is fussy--colored bands differentiate between introductory material, science ideas, projects, and quizzes--the many colorful sports photos and drawings do help clarify concepts like inertia, friction, and centripetal and centrifugal force. The technical explanations can be daunting, however: ""Precession occurs in the gyroscope. As it begins to tilt, the force of gravity pulls it down vertically. Another force acts to move the wheel in a horizontal direction, causing the whole gyroscope to move in a circle around the pivot."" A glossary definition of ""precession"" fails to clarify. Still, useful as supplementary material on simple machines. Glossary; index.
