A story of defeat, inherent in the characters of Stephen Martell, man and boy, made for a wrong outlook on life by the circumstances which crowded upon him at every turn, the family scandal which thrust him at five, into a false position in life, and the conflicting ambitions of his elders which forced him now into one misfit, now another. The suggestion of comparison with Of Human Bondage is not far-fetched. There is something of the poignant seeking after a place in a world that eternally lets him down in the story of Stephen, as there is in the story of Philip. A psychological novel of a man to whom life could give no answer.
