KIRKUS REVIEW

How does a first rate theologian and widely-acclaimed teacher of preachers perform when he himself is in the pulpit? If the man in question is the Rev. Dr. Nels F. S. Ferre, professor of Christian Theology at Andover Newton Theological School, the answer is ""very well indeed"". In God's New Age, a collection of his recent sermons, Dr. Ferre, without ceasing to be profound, is yet able to relate himself to the world of men and contemporary problems so that the reader, or hearer, is made keenly aware that the Christian Gospel is relevant to the stresses, strains, and confusions of modern life, and is made to understand that he is privileged to be living in God's new age. It is no easy way of life which Dr. Ferre suggests, but a victorious one which cannot be measured by success, for the power of the Holy Spirit is available to man to help him turn around and face a new day which God, through him, will create. This is sophisticated preaching, demanding an intelligent audience, but the mature Christian will thirst for more of it. It is to be hoped, therefore, that other preachers will re-charge their homelitic batteries here.
