An anthology of prose and verse dealing with cats, which- says the editor- are not a narrow specialty, but universal in appeal. A skimming of the contributors would indicate a wide variety of literary approaches, as he includes writing from such varied authors as T. S. Eliot, Sylvia Townsend Warner, Poe, ""Saki"", Stephen Vincent Benet, Lewis Carroll, ""Colette"", Perrault and so on. There are short stories here as well as serious pieces, anecdote and reportage, verse and essay. Diana Thorne has supplied not only the illustrations- sure passport to many readers- but one story. The cat appears as sharply individualized- a law unto itself. Predictable market.
