OUTSTANDING MODERN QUARTER HORSE SIRES

The first third of this gives -- for those interested in horses -- a background of the start of the ""quarter horse"", in the Chocksaw horses, small blocky types, which Carolina planters got from the Indians and used in informal quarter mile races. Utility horses, mainly, they were crossbred with Arabian and Oriental stock, but the distinction maintained as against ""American Thoroughbreds"". They became an important economic factor in the Southwest as cow ponies. A brief section outlines the standards and practices of the National Association and the American Quarter Racing Association. The balance of the text takes up specific sires, in brief biographies. In its special field, an important item.
