The first novel from a writer of many short sports stories is packed with tackle-by-tackle accounts of on-the-grid action. With his first, Mr. Hutto has beyond many in this field; he is as adept when describing the emotional and social difficulties of Scotty Clayburn as he is when his young star is in the game. The problem of business men paying big prices to coax out-of-town ringers into Westfield is the theme, with Scotty standing as the vulnerable but innocent target for gossips and reporters. A good, solid story, it is bound to be read with enthusiasm by the crowded grandstand of young football fanatics.
