THE BEST SUMMER

Boys who are enthusiastic about horses don't often find their counterparts in fiction. This book is appropriate for both sexes and has the appealing, if rather rambling tone, of the ""this is what it was like when I was young"" sort of reminiscence. Martin Crews talks about the summer of 1919, when, at 16, he was driven up to Vermont (in the family Marmon) and permitted to work on a farm there instead of staying in his proper Bostonian household. The best of memories of the good old days, as wholesomely refreshing as Martin's favorite fodder -- fresh-baked doughnuts.
