LONGFELLOW: His Life and Work by Newton Arvin

LONGFELLOW: His Life and Work

This is an amiable assessment that, while denying the status of major poet for Longfellow, manages to find a place in our literature for this schoolmarm favorite. The book offers a sustained, sympathetic analysis of Evangeline, Hiawatha etc., and traces the shaping influences via German Romanticism, Dante and Chaucer. A full and fitting tribute to a critically neglected poet still pushed in the high schools.
