The Dolphin is a mid-Victorian theater rescued from decrepitude and demolition and restored to its authentic camp by playwright/director Peregrine Jay, mysteriously financed by a gross, oil-rich Greek in possession of some gloves thought to be part of Shakespeare's estate. Miss Marsh works her characteristic storyteller's magic with the elements of theater and suspense. Roderick Alleyn, one of the few favorite sleuths to age well, makes his featured appearance among the players, who speak with a combination of silky spite and instant wit -- not quite real, but that's entertainment.
