MOTHER GOOSE ABROAD

The international character of this collection gives it some interest, but in general the translations of these 19 European nursery rhymes lack the tripping rhythms and delightful sound of Bodecker's all-Danish It's Raining Said John Twaining (KR, 1973)--and in fact a few of these either already exist in more felicitous English versions, or are well known here in the original (""On the Bridge of Avignon,"" ""Frere Jacques""). And Trevor Stubley's clunky illustrations are in a familiar European illustration mode, all splash and pattern with no sustaining depth or subtlety or even pleasing design.
