ECLIPSE by Nicholas Wollaston

Tom, twin brother of Geoffrey who had drowned at sea (did he fall or was he pushed?), comes to spend Christmas with Cleo, Geoffrey's wife, and young son Giles. Symbiotic and telekinetic affinities abound not only between the twins but now between Tom and Cleo -- ""both widows"" -- and it's all surcharged with other things as well (her drinking; his syphilis) before the final expiation. Yours not to reason why or with, even if it's all rather glossily turned out.
