BATTLE DAY AT CAMP DELMONT

Separated by Sally's stay at summer camp in their first appearance, Maude and Sally (1982), Weiss's two little friends now go off to camp together. And together they stick. Even when they draw opposing teams on Battle Day, Maude remains so friendly toward Sally that her teammates grouch, ""Which side are you on?"" But when the last competition of the day ends with Maude battling Sally in the tennis final, Maude plays hard and wins. ""You see, Maude,"" says Sue, ""there's nothing wrong with wanting to win."" Losing is okay, too, Weiss hastens to add, and she ends, perhaps a little unrealistically, with good feelings all around. The lesson here is less generous and less apt than the message of Maude and Sally. Still, Weiss's cartoons of camp life are as captivating as ever. The little campers at play are collectively delightful, and incidental chuckles abound.
