If this were written by almost anyone else we might toss this book aside. People are fed up with Russia and books on it, yet many of the most intelligent men of our time say glibly we are headed for Russia's plight. Perhaps we are, but it is necessary to know the origin and causes that contributed to that plight before we can view our own situation, study our trends and do anything about our future. Berdyaev writes simply and well with a gift for clarifying the most subtle and intricate subjects so that the book provides excellent reading, as enchanting as it is enlightening. One is led step by step through a perfect maze of Russian history, her politics, her ecclesiastical affairs, her enthusiasms and faiths, a fascinating conglomeration of East and West, Pagan and Christian.
