PIERRE TEILHARD DE CHARDIN

This is a serious, revealing study of the life and works of the controversial figure whose Phenomenon of Man was hailed by many as one of the great books of our century, a French Jesuit paleontologist whose life's work was devoted to a synthesis of his own view of cosmic evolution and Catholic theology. This supplies a real need. The details of Father de Chardin's life are not well known in the U.S. and most readers will welcome the kind of critical exposition to be found in this volume, for de Chardin's own writing offer many difficulties to the average reader. A discussion of this critics, both favorable and unfavorable, is included in the book -- a worthwhile feature, inasmuch as U.S. readers know that there has been considerable controversy about de Chardin's ideas but, generally speaking, have not become acquainted with the specific arguments pro and con. Anyone who has read The Phenomenon of Man will be extremely interested in this book, and anyone who has not read it will find this an excellent introduction to the truly magisterial work of Teilhard de Chardin.
