CRIMINAL CONVERSATION

Inspector Van der Valk of the Amsterdam police (Love in Amsterdam, Because of the Cats, Question of Loyalty, etc.) takes on an unofficial investigation--both the complainant and the culprit are much too important to submit to official bumbling. Freeling is at the top of his form (psychological thrillers). The murderer is a doctor noted for his care and handling (fondling) of wealthy women, and no mean psychologist himself, but no match for the Inspector. Their cat and mouse game becomes the classic relationship of interdependency between hunter and hunted. Simenon-esque and successfully so, as usual.
