Lovely Confederate orphan Camilla Jardine returns to her English ancestral home to nurse her young sister Nell, a redhaired sprite crippled in a mysterious fall. Wychwood has no wood, but does have plenty of the other, as well as a secret garden frequented by pre-Christian deities, the Old Ones. In this garden grow rosemary, that's for remembrance, and datura, that's for atropine. Is there also a Bad Seed in this peaceful spot? Lots of mood and magic, along with heavy-handed if refreshing attempts at message: Camilla must learn to reconcile her intellectual and ESPassionate nature. Gripping enough until the finale--demonic children, those current attention-getters, are hard on happy endings.
