KIRKUS REVIEW

Just a touch of miscellaneous information on the ten cities selected here (industries, utilities, landmarks, sites), since in each case these short profiles of places are developed from a particular historical highlight. With Boston, it's the teaparty; Philadelphia, the Declaration of Independence; New Orleans, its defense by Andrew Jackson during the War of 1812; San Francisco, the gold rush; Salt Lake City, the Mormon settlement; Chicago, the great fire; etc., etc. The exact usefulness of a book such as this is a little hard to define, but the incidents -- dramatic per se -- lend historical action and interest.
