Day and night, wide and narrow, loud and quiet—all make an appearance in home scenes, street scenes, and playground scenes that star a brother and sister, and sometimes their mother; the word “day” opens the book, and “night” closes it, but beyond this bracketing, the pairs of opposites appear on the same spreads.
