A soon-to-be favorite that kids will love hearing, and, later, paging through by themselves.
A rhyming and guessing delight for infants and toddlers.
The latest entry in author Laden’s popular Peek-a series takes readers on a fun-filled trip to a farm in search of agricultural rhymes for “Moo.” The words “Peek a” challenge children to guess who or what lies on the other side of the die-cut window on the opposite page. Behind a field of sprouting green shoots is a full-grown tomato (“Peek a GREW!”); a feed bag conceals a toothy nag chomping on hay (“Peek a CHEW!”). A rooster (“Peek a COCK-A-DOODLE-DOO!”), a sheep (“Peek a EWE!”), and a mirror (“Peek a YOU, TOO!”) round out the festivities. The book is just right for small hands, and it’s sturdy enough to withstand them. The artwork is irresistible: bright colors show off the simple but elegant design. The images are deceptively cartoonish, even crude at first glance, but every drawing is embellished with meticulous, symmetrical shading suggestive of woodblock prints. The animals have loads of personality; the farming scenes and props are uncluttered, with just the right amount of detail. The rhyme scheme makes the vocabulary easy to remember, and, while the gags may not set new standards in literary humor, the element of page-turning surprise and the ever popular peekaboo motif should have little ones howling with laughter.

Uncomplicated fun that sets readers up for the earlier, more-complicated books to come.
Little Blue Truck and his pal Toad meet friends old and new on a springtime drive through the country.
This lift-the-flap, interactive entry in the popular Little Blue Truck series lacks the narrative strength and valuable life lessons of the original Little Blue Truck (2008) and its sequel, Little Blue Truck Leads the Way (2009). Both of those books, published for preschoolers rather than toddlers, featured rich storylines, dramatic, kinetic illustrations, and simple but valuable life lessons—the folly of taking oneself too seriously, the importance of friends, and the virtue of taking turns, for example. At about half the length and with half as much text as the aforementioned titles, this volume is a much quicker read. Less a story than a vernal celebration, the book depicts a bucolic drive through farmland and encounters with various animals and their young along the way. Beautifully rendered two-page tableaux teem with butterflies, blossoms, and vibrant pastel, springtime colors. Little Blue greets a sheep standing in the door of a barn: “Yoo-hoo, Sheep! / Beep-beep! / What’s new?” Folding back the durable, card-stock flap reveals the barn’s interior and an adorable set of twin lambs. Encounters with a duck and nine ducklings, a cow with a calf, a pig with 10 (!) piglets, a family of bunnies, and a chicken with a freshly hatched chick provide ample opportunity for counting and vocabulary work.

Perfectly fine but nothing new.

Caregiver-child love abounds in this rhyming board book full of animal puns.
One thing’s for certain, there’s plenty of sweet (and groanworthy) sentiments in this book. Rossner writes, “Giving HOGS and kisses / sends me to the moon!” and, “I’m such a lucky DUCK. / You really QUACK me up!” The book progresses entirely in this fashion, with a new animal pair and pun with each page turn. It reads well as a book for a caregiver to share with a lap-sitting child. On that mark, it succeeds in providing plenty of opportunities for giggles and snuggles. That said, at times the meter is forced, making the cadence a bit stilted, and the cuddles/bubbles rhyme is a dubious one. This is an issue for a book that will almost solely be read aloud. Gibson’s illustrations are very charming; the animals and insects with big eyes and expressive faces have high appeal. The warmth of the animals’ embraces and cuddles translates well from the page, inviting the same snuggles from readers. Decorated eggs appear on each page, and the bunny pair from the cover features prominently. Overall, the concept and message of the book are high interest and age-appropriate, but it doesn’t stand out from the very crowded shelf of “I love you, little one!” books similar to it.
