**Completely successful transfer of myth into realism in a delightful retelling of the story of Hercules and the lion. There's an imaginative quality to the conception of Hercules as a big overgrown lad in a very real family setting,- too big for his clothes, too big for his school desk -- and yet with a gentle side that made him a general favorite in the village and among his playmates. Even the king is made into a credible- and humorous-character. And yet the basic elements of a folk hero tale are there- in the story of how Hercules slew the lion that was destroying the peace of the countryside. The artist has caught the feel of the story in enchanting pictures- now full of action, now of repose- and again and again with laughter, from chuckles to guffaws. There are double spreads and full pages and decorative marginal drawings and spots,- some in line, some in color wash.
