A hole is to dig and that's where archaeologist Francis Preston, on the trace of some early Christian church plate, is found dead. Jonathan Gaunt, external auditor for something called the Remembrancer's Office (out of Edinburgh and representing the Queen) makes his second sortie abroad to decipher something much simpler than the Rosetta Stone which won't throw any dust in your eyes. Gentle, genteel stuff.
