....and the castle walls are crumbling around the Duke and Duchess of Atten-borough. They live in only a few of their 300 rooms; their daughter, the Lady Margaret lives in an apartment over the stables with her eight year old son, James who is planning to marry five year old Queenie, daughter of Hazlewood's only help, Mrs. Matteotti. Margaret, who has been deserted by her husband, is now being courted by Simon whose sale of his family heirlooms is his only income. Margaret is firm and forceful and when Simon inherits at the death of his father gets him to sell off all but a little of his estate and settle for farming. She has her way too in persuading her parents to open Hazlewood to the public to pay for the heating that is to keep the Duchess' bronchitis under control. And James' explorations of the palace and its uninhabited quarters stirs up quite a bit of dust and more than one surprise. A light touch for the stately homes, the heavy taxes and the necessity for a new kind of normalcy make this sprightly, easy reading.
