KIRKUS REVIEW

Here is a prose translation of the classic ""tale of the warrior lord"" -- Chanson de Roland. The most valuable contribution the book makes is the editor's long introduction, telling the background and history of the legend, and the reasons for the new translation. The Baldwin version, long accepted, is a bit heavy footed. The Eston-Collier version, published by Harcourt, Brace, is the best for general use. This fills a need for source material, libraries, schools, etc.
