It's 1948, and Geneva and her family are waiting for the water behind a TVA dam to rise and cover their family land. Geneva, a marble-playing 14-year-old, is under her stoic mother's thumb, but feels more affinity with her dotty, ancient grandmother, who refuses to move. As the waters rise, the displaced families respond variously with sadness, pain, or hope. Geneva, meanwhile, grows more mature, takes hold of her own future, and cleverly convinces Granny that the Lord isn't ready to receive her. A vivid, textured story, full of mountain grit and stubbornness and humor.
