There once was a woman who married a man/ as silent as feathers blown up by a fan""--and the lengths to which she goes to get a word out of him are trippingly enumerated here: ""She danced the fandango, she stood on her head./ She jumped up and down, up and down on her bed. . . . She doused him with water, she sank him in mud./ She pushed him off porches to land with a thud."" At last she gives up, takes him to the carnival, and there on the roller coaster discovers the trick. Each time they go on it, he utters, ""I'm sick."" Unfortunately Dabcovich's block prints lack the lightness of the verse, so that the rhyme, though clever and well polished, doesn't grab you as a book.
