CLAUDE OF FRANCE; SLAVONIC RHAPSODY

Two musical biographies, the first the story of Debussy, the second the story of Dvorak. The age appeal is so dependent on the interest in the subject of musicians and musical composition, that I am putting the books in this section, for those junior high school students who are musically inclined. For the most part the appeal is to somewhat older readers, particularly with the Debussy, which seems to me much more deeply rooted in knowledge of his music. Good background books, with outline facts of the lives of the two men, their hesitant approach to their life occupations, the revolutionary contributions they made to European music. The style of writing is not, in either book, particularly memorable. But they are competent and adequate presentations of the material. Market-music students and music school libraries chiefly. Good looking books- illustrated with decorative sketches. Fine typography. Excellent listings of works of the composers, recordings, etc.
