THE LEWIS ENGLISH REFRESHER AND VOCABULARY BUILDER

By

Pub Date: June 27th, 1945
Publisher: Wilfred Funk

About this time last year came Opdyke's Say What You Mean. Lewis was co-author of Days to a More Powerful Vocabulary. Better Speech for You by Eginton was another Funk publication along similar lines. Now comes this excellent first aid to better speech providing what can be used as a six weeks' course in vocabulary building, analysis and improvement projects in speech habits, mastery of word, speed up in reading. In general the material is driven home by a combination of tests (which are fun to give yourself) and repetition. If one approach doesn't catch you, another will. The section devoted to Spelling was particularly good; Pronunciation inevitably produces conflicting points of view -- but Lewis in the main seems sound, unfaddy, middle of the road. The speed up of reading wisely concentrates more on reading for content and meaning, with speed a secondary factor which usually results from intelligent practice. Have a look at the book yourself -- and make group games of some of the tests!
