BATS IN THE BELFRY

Matson finished a novel started by Thorne Smith, which has since been widely published through the picture, I Married a Witch. This novel proves him an adequate successor, in his own right, though he still does not rate the mantle. The story ploks up the threads of The Passionate Witch, with Jennifer's resurrection from seven years' burial, and the riots, disturbances and upheavals her return to the living caused. Poor Mr. Wooly resists in vain Jennifer's unearthly demands to be disinterred, she assaults the community through dreams, causing a run on his bank and other underhand tactics, until he is driven to compliance. Then more doubletrouble and springtime did- climaxing in Jennifer's involuntary return to whence she came and Mr. Wooly's appearance at his own funeral. A mad fantasy for lighter moments.
