Pleasant, rather charming poems, chiefly of towns in Cumberland and Devonshire, England, by an English poet whose verse has appeared in most of the liberal English journals and some American ones. A slightly Tennysonic gift of words and melody is somewhat sicklied over by the pale cast of modern thought and feeling, dictated by the destruction -- both material and spiritual -- of the war, and by certain vague, brooding intimations of the end of the world, or at least of England. The sense of ""place"" is the best quality of this poetry. Lovers of England and of pleasant, not too intellectual verse, will enjoy this volume for transient reading on a summer's day.
