Romantic fiction in a period portrait, indirectly presented, with high color and some dramatic effects. This is the story of Sorrel Kingaby, scorned and neglected by her father because of her sex, who gets her revenge for a shoddy childhood when she inherits her father's estate and business at his death. Strong willed, competent, poised, Sorrel determines to carry on as though she were a son. Sorrow comes when she falls in love with the office clerk, Jamie, only to have him accept her financial help and then run off with another girl. Seeking to rescue the business, she goes into a project with two smugglers, is reduced by one, who is killed by the law, and finds herself carrying his child. At the close she decides to see it through, ignoring that society which has treated her so ill.
