Another so-so adventure for Edinburgh's Jonathan Gaunt of Her Majesty's Exchequer Office--who's investigating Maggie Dimond, an executive type with Inland Revenue whose unexplained affluence seems connected to frequent trips to Czechoslovakia. Off, then, to a Trade Fair in Prague, with Maggie and under-cover Gaunt winding up at the same hotel--while an agent of the Czech OBZ is soon murdered before Gaunt's very eyes: he recognizes one of the killers as Matthew Garr, a Swiss businessman seen dining with Maggie in Edinburgh only nights before! But what about that mysterious bearded man who also has an interest in Maggie? And so it goes, heavy on shoot-outs, as Gaunt (with help from a taxi-driver/professor who leads a Czech rebel group) figures out that a legendary treasure lies behind all the brouhaha. Some informative glimpses of Prague and environs--but strictly routine when it comes to plot and characters.
