THE GIFT OF THE MAGI and Five Other Stories

We'll have to admit that we're not always mad for these capsule collections but the sensitive wash drawings here could have stepped out of O. Henry's New York--the shabby gentility, the slightly self-conscious gestures, even the composition and style. (Those for Red Chief are not quite so good but they'll do.) The other three stories are less frequently assigned but all together this makes a varied, more-than-useful introduction to the author.
