I'm frank in confessing I found it tough going. A plot, tenuous and thinly spun, almost lost in a verbiage of nautical terminology. Perhaps ardent sea lovers might like it for the meticulous attention to details of life a landlubber cannot know. The story of what happened on board a sailing vessel bound for Africa from Porto Rico with a cargo of lumber, when the Negro cook shipped with his wife, the one women among rough men. The cook was a sadist at the start -- and he liked to see his victims squirm. But it ends in overboard for him and death for her -- with a bitter atmosphere of jealously and resentments, long smouldering, brought to fever pitch on the surface. Your sea market.
